Every Character in the New Superman Movie Explained

No spoilers – just context, connections, and why they matter.

James Gunn’s Superman is almost here, and it’s not just another reboot. This is the first chapter of the brand-new DC Universe, a total reset with no ties to the old DCEU and Gunn isn’t starting small. Instead of easing us into the world with another origin story, he’s throwing us straight into a fully realized universe filled with heroes, villains, cosmic forces, government agencies, and more.

Here’s a full breakdown of every confirmed character in the film who they are, why they matter, and what they might mean for the future of the DCU.

The Heroes

Clark Kent / Superman
This isn’t an origin story. Clark’s already Superman, already working at the Daily Planet, and already saving lives. James Gunn describes this version as kind, decent, and hopeful. A Superman who does the right thing even when the world doesn’t. That alone sets a very different tone from previous darker interpretations of the character. This is a Superman with strong morals and a beating heart: The foundation of the new DCU.

Krypto the Superdog
Yes, he’s in the movie. Krypto is Superman’s loyal, flying, laser-eyed companion and if you know James Gunn, you know this dog is going to have a big personality. Expect Krypto to bring emotional depth, comic relief, and at least one scene where he completely steals the show. He’s long been a fan-favorite in comics and animation, and now he’s finally coming to the big screen.

Metamorpho
One of the stranger heroes in DC lore, Metamorpho can transform parts of his body into elements like gas, acid, stone and even kryptonite! He’s weird, visually wild, and a total misfit, which makes him a perfect fit for a Gunn-led team. Expect some humor, some heart, and a lot of unpredictable moments.

Mr. Terrific
A tech genius, Olympic-level athlete, and one of the smartest people in the DC Universe. His T-Spheres (those floating orbs from the trailer) can do everything from surveillance to combat. He’s the brains of the operation. Tactical, strategic, and calm under pressure. Think of him as the DCU’s new high-IQ anchor.

Hawkgirl
A winged warrior with a giant mace and centuries of battle experience. Sometimes her origin is alien, sometimes mystical, but she’s always powerful. Her inclusion hints at larger, possibly cosmic themes in the DCU. Expect her to bring grit, presence, and a serious punch.

Guy Gardner (Green Lantern)
One of the most extra characters in all of DC. He’s loud, arrogant, confrontational and somehow still a hero. As one of the more controversial Green Lanterns, Gardner adds edge and unpredictability. He’s comic relief, conflict, and chaos, all in one green-suited package.

The Villains (and Government Wildcards)

Lex Luthor
Superman’s greatest enemy. A genius billionaire with a God complex and a deep hatred for aliens. Gunn’s version of Lex will be colder, more modern, less cartoonish and more calculating. Expect a sociopath who manipulates from the shadows rather than punches in the street. But hey, if a power suit shows up later, we’re not complaining.

Rick Flag Sr.
Tied to the Creature Commandos series, Rick Flag Sr. represents the military’s uneasy relationship with superpowered beings. His role signals that Amanda Waller’s black-ops world is watching Superman closely and that tensions between government and hero could become a major theme going forward.

The Engineer
A member of The Authority (a team getting their own movie), she’s part-human, part-nanotech, and fully dangerous. She can morph her body into weapons, hack tech, and go toe-to-toe with the best. Her inclusion might be setting up the rise of violent, pragmatic heroes. You know the kind Superman has always opposed.

The Hammer of Baravia
An original character created for the film, likely a state-sponsored “Superman” for another nation. Think political rival meets military enforcer. If he’s anything like what his name implies, he could serve as a mirror for global fear and a weaponized answer to America’s Man of Steel.

Ultraman (Unconfirmed Identity)
A mysterious masked figure seen in the trailer. James Gunn has gone out of his way to keep this character’s face hidden which means their reveal is likely a major plot twist. Is it a secret identity? A multiverse tease? A clone? Whatever it is, it’s designed to shake up the story.

Eve Teschmacher
Lex Luthor’s classic girlfriend and confidante, often torn between loyalty and morality. She could be a twisted romantic partner, an unwilling accomplice, or a wildcard who tips the balance. Her presence is a nod to past Superman stories but her role in this new universe could surprise us.

The Daily Planet Crew

Lois Lane
More than just a love interest. Lois is Superman’s partner, professionally and emotionally. She challenges him, grounds him, and often pushes him to see the bigger picture. Expect her to be fearless, sharp, and central to both the story and Superman’s moral compass.

Jimmy Olsen
Superman’s best friend and the Planet’s go-to photographer. Usually comic relief, but Jimmy is also loyal, brave, and more important than he’s often given credit for. Fans still remember how poorly he was handled in Batman v Superman. This is his redemption arc.

Perry White
The no-nonsense editor-in-chief. A newsroom legend who demands truth, inspires hustle, and serves as a moral voice inside the chaos. He’s old-school journalism in a modern world which is a perfect counterweight to everything happening around him.

Cat Grant
A gossip columnist with attitude, style, and sharp instincts. She brings the media’s obsession with Superman’s image into focus. She’s a fun, flashy contrast to Lois’s pursuit of truth. Expect sass, fire, and maybe a headline or two that makes Superman uncomfortable.

Steve Lombard
The sports guy. Loud, obnoxious, and always teasing Clark, but ultimately loyal. He brings humor and human grounding to the Daily Planet, reminding us that this world still has everyday people even when gods walk among them.

Superman’s Parents

Jonathan & Martha Kent
Both Kents are confirmed to be alive in this version which is a welcome change from previous films. Their presence signals a Clark Kent who still has his moral foundation intact, and who hasn’t been shaped by tragedy alone. Expect emotional grounding, quiet wisdom, and heart.

A Bigger Universe

This movie isn’t just about Superman. It’s the first piece of a much larger DCU puzzle. We’ve got cosmic warriors, nanotech mercenaries, government spies, mysterious villains, and a dog that shoots lasers from his eyes all orbiting around a hopeful Superman who wants to do the right thing.

If this is the tone of the new DC Universe: Bold, weird, heartfelt. Then we’re in for something special.
