With James Gunn’s Superman finally soaring into theaters, it’s time to talk about what really makes this movie special: the characters. From iconic heroes to unexpected standouts (and even one superpowered pup), this film introduces a whole new DC Universe with heart, humor, and surprises.
Here are my top 10 favorite characters from the film ranked from “pretty cool” to “I need more of them immediately.” And hey, if you’ve seen it, let me know in the comments how your list compares!
10. Hawk Girl
I was genuinely excited to see Hawk Girl enter the DCU, but unfortunately, she got the least amount of screen time of the Justice gang. Her presence, flinging her mace, flying with style, and screeching into battle was fun, but not fleshed out. It left me wanting more. I get that it’s not her movie, but next time, let’s give Hawk Girl more than just a highlight reel.

9. Metamorpho
Another mystery character with untapped potential. We don’t get a ton of background, but his powers are visually fascinating and wildly inventive. Plus, finding out he’s a dad adds an intriguing layer. I’m hoping we see more of him maybe even as part of the Justice Gang proper. And the idea of Metamorpho teaming up with Mr. Terrific? Inject that into my veins.

8. The Engineer
We didn’t get much backstory, but wow what a cool character. Her nanotech-based powers let her shape-shift, hack tech, and stand toe-to-toe with Superman. There’s so much narrative potential here: will she return to Lex’s side? Go rogue? Join the heroes? I’m invested either way.

7. Jimmy Olsen
This one completely caught me off guard in the best way. Instead of the awkward nerdy photographer stereotype, we get a smooth, effortlessly funny Jimmy Olsen who commands the screen. His comedic timing is on point, and his chemistry with Lois and Clark is great. Rumors of a Daily Planet spin-off? Yes, please.

6. Guy Gardner
Most of us grew up with Hal Jordan or John Stewart, so Guy Gardner is a refreshing wild card. Nathan Fillion plays him as the arrogant, egotistical Green Lantern you love to side-eye. He brings tension, comic relief, and that signature bravado that’ll make future Lantern stories a must-watch.

5. Mr. Terrific
The smartest guy in the room literally. Mr. Terrific dominates screen time among the new Justice gang and completely owns it. From his high-tech T-spheres to his athletic ability, he brings both brains and brawn. He’s already confirmed to appear in future projects, and I couldn’t be more excited. The DCU needs more of this guy.

4. Krypto the Superdog
Let’s be honest… Krypto could’ve easily been overused. But James Gunn plays it perfectly. Used sparingly, Krypto absolutely steals the scene whenever he shows up. He’s adorable, powerful, and hilariously stubborn. He’s also dangerously relatable for any dog owner (who hasn’t had a pup ignore commands and barrel into furniture?). Gunn once again proves he knows how to write lovable animal characters talking or not.

3. Lois Lane
This version of Lois might be the best we’ve ever seen. Strong, independent, and fearless, she’s a genuine partner to Superman and not just a damsel in distress. Her scenes with Mr. Terrific showcase her investigative brilliance, and her chemistry with Clark (David Corenswet) is electric. She’s smart, funny, determined, and a key part of why this new DCU works so well.

2. Superman / Clark Kent
This was a huge challenge: introducing a new Superman while winning over a fanbase that’s still attached to Henry Cavill. But David Corenswet nailed it. He’s charming, hopeful, and human. A Superman that feels grounded and inspiring at the same time. The only thing I wanted more of was Clark Kent. Hopefully, in future films, we’ll see more of how he balances life as both reporter and savior.

1. Lex Luthor
Hands down, no contest. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is everything I’ve ever wanted in a Superman villain. He’s smart, unhinged, calculated, and absolutely terrifying. From his quiet manipulations to outright cruelty (yes, he kidnaps Krypto!), this Lex isn’t just memorable, he’s instantly iconic. Forget the awkward version we got in Batman v Superman because this is the definitive Lex. The perfect foil for our Superman.

Final Thoughts
James Gunn didn’t just reboot Superman he gave us a new, character-driven launchpad for the entire DCU. Every one of these characters brought something new to the table, and honestly, I can’t wait to see where they go next.
